Join the community to hear resilience expert Dr. Michael Ungar on Thurs., Dec. 3rd, 2020 at 6:30-8:15 p.m.

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and many of us are sheltering in place, there is a tremendous strain placed on our young people and their relationships with family, peers and their communities. These tensions can have long-lasting effects on mental health. The good news is that resilience is possible, but it requires more than just a positive mindset. Building on his research from around the world and clinical work with child populations that have experienced the stress of social isolation, poverty, stigma and violence, Dr. Ungar will discuss 12 factors young people need to both survive and thrive during this pandemic.

Dr. Ungar is a Family Therapist and Professor of Social Work at Dalhousie University where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Child, Family and Community Resilience. He has written 16 books for parents, caregivers, educators, mental health professionals, and researchers. His recent works include Change Your World (2019), Working with Children and Youth with Complex Needs, 2nd Edition (2020), and Multisystemic Resilience, coming out in 2021.

It’s Not Just You: A Conversation About Pandemic-Related Exhaustion and Burnout

Over the course of the pandemic, Ann Douglas has been hard at work on a brand-new book for and about women. Her research has given her the opportunity to have heart-to-heart conversations with well over 100 women: women who have been grappling with all kinds of different pandemic-related challenges. Ann will share some of what she learned from these conversations: how the pandemic has added to the heavy workload that women were already shouldering back in pre-pandemic times (and that has been even heavier for some women); and what this has meant in terms of the overall health and well-being of women. She’ll be encouraging you to reflect on your own experiences — both the challenges you’ve faced and what you’ve learned about yourself as you’ve lived through this strange and uncertain time.
